  • Description: Projects primarily support the M. D. Steer Audiology Clinic at Purdue University. Projects either help the patients at the clinic (adaptive hearing devices, sound level alert meters), clinicians (diagnostic tools), or support teaching of students (tutorial software, large-scale model of the ear).

  • Facts: Began Fall 1995. Winner of the Spring 1997 AMD Design Award. Winner of the 1998 Burton-Morgan Entrepreneurship Competition (automated locker project). Changed from SLAC (Speech-Language and Audiology Clinics) to ISD (Indiana School for the Deaf) in Fall 2017.
  • Mission: Projects primarily support the M. D. Steer Audiology Clinic at Purdue University. Projects either help the patients at the clinic (adaptive hearing devices, sound level alert meters), clinicians (diagnostic tools), or support teaching of students (tutorial software, large-scale model of the ear).
  • Delivered: Infrared-controlled lock installed on a locker at a local school to allow a student with a physical disability to unlock her locker. Realistic tracheal model to help laryngectomy patients learn how to install in-dwelling prosthesis. Voice-activated children's software to motivate speech in developmentally delayed children. Software for computing speech rate of spontaneous speech. Prototype of glasses-mounted microphone array system to improve directionality of hearing aids.
