Peer Teaching Assistants (PTAs)
One way that students in the Engineering Honors Program can stay connected with us is by becoming a Peer Teaching Assistant (PTA) for the ENGR 16100/16200 course sequence. This is a great opportunity for students to have an impact on Purdue by shaping the future direction of the First Year Engineering Honors courses as well as helping next year’s incoming Honors students be successful. We are looking for former students of the FYE Honors classes with good communication skills, a commitment towards helping others, a willingness to learn new things, and the ability to be an effective member of our Instructional Team. If this sounds interesting to you, please consider filling out an application and joining our team!.
Being a Peer TA is a paid position. As a Peer TA, you would be expected to work (on average) 15 hours per pay period (two weeks) with some variations both upwards and downwards during the semester. Typical duties can include grading, attending class sessions, staffing office hours, managing project demos, or proctoring exams. PTAs also participate in one specialty group within our teaching team, which can include duties such as preparing projects, managing course operations, validating exams, or other course-related activities. Availability for multiple semesters is preferred, but this is not a requirement. It is required that all applicants have completed both semesters of the FYE Engineering Honors courses prior to starting their duties, though all undergraduate classifications of students (First Year, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors) may apply.
Typically, we accept applications for PTA positions in the spring for a starting date in the following fall semester. Currently, however, we are looking to hire PTAs to start in the Spring 2023 semester. To start the process, please download an application as a Word file, fill it out, and return it to Dr. Timothy Whalen (whalen@purdue.edu). Once we review your application, we will contact you to inform you about further steps in the hiring process.
