Activating/Updating BoilerKey Tokens

Activating/Updating BoilerKey Tokens

The Purdue BoilerKey is available as a smartphone app or a dongle that displays changing numbers every time it is used.

Whichever option you choose you will want to have your 4 digit PIN set.

To set your PIN visit https://www.purdue.edu/apps/account/flows/BoilerKey

Choose to "Set my BoilerKey PIN"

  • Follow the instructions to set a 4 digit PIN

Now you can proceed with setting up the DUO App (Option 1) or your hardware boilerkey (Option 2).

Option 1: Using the smartphone App (Much more convenient!)

We prefer and recommend the use of the smartphone app.

Visit https://www.purdue.edu/apps/account/flows/BoilerKey

Choose the option to "Set up a new Duo Mobile Boilerkey," this will provide links to the App from the Apple, Google Play, and Mobile Windows stores and will then walk you through steps to set up and test the App.

Once completed from the main page choose "Where I Use BoilerKey" and select : "Require BoilerKey for CAS” (The first option)

  • Click "Return to the main manage BoilerKey page"

Choose "Enable BoilerKey Self-Recovery via text messaging" and complete the needed steps.

  • While not required, it is strongly suggested you enter your Cell Phone information, this will allow Purdue to contact you with public safety emergency notifications as well as temporary passwords if you get locked out due to BoilerKey issues.

That should be it!

Option 2: the Hardware BoilerKey:

When you receive your new BoilerKey Token (not the smartphone app Duo Mobile) you will need to follow the steps below to activate it. Most people only use the hardware dongle if they do not own a smartphone, and tend to quickly tire of the more cumbersome process. If you find yourself not needing a hardware dongle any more, please return it to us for decommissioning and recycling.

Visit https://www.purdue.edu/apps/account/flows/BoilerKey

Choose "Test my BoilerKey" and verify that your new token works by following the steps below as opposed to the instructions on the web page, which are geared towards the smartphone App:

  • Enter your career account for the 'login' where requested.
  • With the token held as pictured below (orientation depends on the model), push the button on your new token to reveal a 6 digit numeric code.
  • In the 'password' box enter the 4 digit PIN you have already created, followed by a comma and then the 6 digit code. Example 1234,123456
  • Click "Test BoilerKey Authentication"
  • The page should refresh with a message "You successfully tested BoilerKey authentication!"
  • Click "Return to the main manage BoilerKey page"

Choose "Where I Use BoilerKey" and select : "Require BoilerKey for CAS” (The first option)
