Purdue University will hold its first Symposium on Applied Spectroscopy and Photonics: From Cells to Cosmos in September. This event is attracting top researchers in the field, with subjects ranging from Mars exploration to biomedical engineering.

The symposium will be on September 16, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Thomas S. and Harvey D. Wilmeth Active Learning Center, and is being organized by Purdue’s chapter of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

Five Nuclear Engineering undergraduate students recently participated in Purdue’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program, an 11-week summer program designed to expose students to the opportunities available to improve life for individuals and society through research.

Kim, who earned his master's and doctoral degrees at Purdue, became head of the School of Nuclear Engineering on June 1. He came to Purdue from Pennsylvania State University. His research includes reactor thermal-hydraulics to reactor system analysis code and reactor safety.

Cybersecurity for nuclear power plants is the focus of a new collaboration between government and academia, led by Purdue University’s Hany Abdel-Khalik.
