School of Nuclear Engineering Associate Professor Allen L. Garner was recognized Nov. 9 during the 2020 Excellence in Research virtual awards ceremony hosted by Theresa Mayer, Purdue’s executive vice president for Research and Partnerships.

Garner, along with a team of 14 Purdue colleagues, won a Seed for Success award, given in recognition of the accomplishments of investigators for their efforts in obtaining a $1M or more external-sponsored award.

The award was given by the U.S. Department of the Army for the team’s contributions to Scalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement (SCALE) for microelectronics workforce development, resulting in more than $20M in funding.

SCALE is Purdue’s major research and workforce development contract funded by the Department of Defense. A program for college students, it provides mentoring, internship matching and targeted research projects for those interested in three microelectronics specialty areas: radiation-hardening; heterogeneous integration/advanced packing; and system on a chip.

The $19.2M, multi-university, public-private-academic partnership addresses the urgent need for engineering graduates to develop defense technologies.

Purdue’s SCALE partners are the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, Vanderbilt, the Air Force Institute of Technology St. Louis University, Brigham University, Arizona State University, Georgia Tech and New Mexico State University.
