The U.S. NRC Visits the School of Nuclear Engineering to Learn about the First Digital-Twin Research Reactor in the Nation
Led by Dr. Stylianos Chatzidakis and his research group, the PUR-1 digital-twin enhances reactor operations by using advanced signal processing and artificial intelligence. This technology aims to create new levels of efficiency, predictive maintenance, and real-time forecasting to reactor operations. This work complements the role Purdue University serves as the site of the nation's first all-digital research reactor, highlighting the university's commitment to nuclear engineering advancements.
This week, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) made a visit to Purdue University to meet with Professor Stylianos Chatzidakis and his research team. In their Instagram caption, the U.S. NRC shared, "We recently visited Purdue University to meet with Nuclear Engineering Professor Stylianos Chatzidakis and several graduate students, to discuss the school’s all-digital research reactor – the first in the nation – and a related research project. Purdue students used artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to keep an eye on the reactor's status and search for any unusual activity, including identifying cybersecurity intrusions or abnormal reactor conditions."
This visit not only underscores Purdue University's leadership in nuclear technology but also emphasizes the enduring collaboration between the NRC and Purdue, a partnership that has flourished for more than 60 years, dating back to the university's original operating license granted in 1962 and renewed in 2016.
