In Memoriam: Dr. Martin López de Bertodano (1957–2025)

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Martin López de Bertodano, who died on February 26, 2025, at the age of 67.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. López de Bertodano served as a dedicated faculty member in the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University from 1992 until his passing. 

Dr. Martin López de Bertodano earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1978, his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983, and his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1992.

He made seminal contributions to the field of thermal-hydraulics, particularly in the areas of stability analysis and computational two-fluid modeling. He was an active member of the ANS Thermal Hydraulics Division and served as Technical Program Chair from 2001 to 2004. He was also the lead author of Two-Fluid Model Stability, Simulation and Chaos, a significant work in the field.

The school of Nuclear Engineering hosted a special memorial event to honor Dr. López de Bertodano on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. During the event, a plaque was presented to his family in appreciation of his outstanding and distinguished service to Purdue University, his impactful research and scholarship, and his tireless commitment to education and mentoring. Dr. López de Bertodano's legacy will live on through the many students, colleagues, and collaborators he inspired. He will be greatly missed.
