Drew Ryan, an undergraduate student in the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University, has been awarded a Rickover Fellowship from the Naval Reactors Division of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This opportunity is considered as one of the most prestigious fellowships in the nation, awarded to top students pursuing a Ph.D. degree in nuclear engineering.

Nuclear Engineering Assistant Professor, Allen Garner, in collaboration with Professor Wenzhuo Wu (Industrial Engineering, Purdue University), the University of Michigan, and Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), received a 3-year, $559,000 project from the Office of Naval Research entitled “Novel High Power Microwave System Designs using Nonlinear Transmission Lines.”

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Nuclear Engineering Assistant Professor, Janelle Wharry a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) grant.

School of Nuclear Engineering Associate Professor, Gennady Miloshevsky received a three-year $450,000 grant with an optional extension of two additional years from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a unit within the U.S. Department of Defense.

Nuclear Engineering Assistant Professor, Allen Garner received a three-year, $509,000 project from the Office of Naval Research entitled “Nanoscale Effects on Gas Breakdown and Electron Emission.”

Millennials are in a unique position to shape the future of the nuclear field. Taking this seriously, students in the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University and members of the U.S. Department of Energy - Office of Nuclear Energy are hosting a Millennial Nuclear Caucus on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

NE Assistant Professor, Janelle Wharry recently received the Young Leaders Professional Development Award from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). This award provides an opportunity for young, professional members of TMS to advance in the field of materials science through participation in activities.

Anna Biela has a hard time remembering exactly when she became hooked on nuclear science. "From a very young age, I just knew about nuclear and how important it was," she said. Anna is on the verge of graduating from Purdue University with a degree in nuclear engineering. She has plans to go to grad school to further her research on reactor core physics.

Her goal is to develop advanced reactors—an area and a career path she is very passionate about.

At age 25, Ian Hamilton is the CEO of his own startup company, Atlas Energy Systems, where he’s working to commercialize a long-lasting radioisotope battery, powered by spent nuclear fuel.
