Construction Engineering Policies and Guidelines for Admitted Students

The following information outlines Construction Engineering (CNE) policies and Expectations for your success.

At the time of your admission during your Transition to Major advising appointment you will be provided with a flow chart that outlines the requirements of your degree plan. It is your responsibility to maintain regular contact with your academic advisor to monitor progress toward graduation, and to assure that all requirements are fulfilled to meet your planned graduation date.

To uphold the high quality of its educational program, Construction Engineering has established certain academic policies as outlined below. Please consult the LSCCE website for guidance on requirements:

The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all BSCNE degree requirements.

Core Course Grade Policy

  1. A student must earn a grade of C- or better in all core1 courses.
  2. A student shall be dismissed from the Construction Engineering program after three attempts to complete a core course where each attempt resulted in a grade of “D+”, “D”, “D-“, “E”, “F”, “W”, or “WF”. Re-entry will be solely at the discretion of the Construction Engineering Undergraduate Committee and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The Undergraduate Committee has the prerogative to set the requirements, if any, for re-entry.2

Max Credit Override Policy

  1. Appointee3 of the Construction Engineering Undergraduate Committee may grant on a case-bycase basis, max credit overrides.

Technical Electives Policy4

  1. Students in the Construction Engineering program are encouraged to choose technical electives that are consistent with their career objectives. In many cases, this can involve courses that are offered outside of the program or LSCCE. The purpose of the policy is to provide general criteria for appropriate selection of technical elective courses offered by other departments, divisions and/or schools.
  2. All technical electives course must be taken for a grade.
  3. CEM or CE courses that are identified as 30000-, 40000-, or 50000-level courses satisfy the requirement of the Policy, with the exception courses with variable titles CE 49700 and CE 59700 must be approved by the Construction Engineering Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
  4. Technical elective courses offered outside of Lyles School must be approved by the Construction Engineer Curriculum Committee, if not satisfy the following criteria:
    1. 300-, 400-, or 500-level coursed offered by departments, divisions, and/or schools in the College of Engineering
    2. Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPCS) courses or Global Design Teams (GEP), including those at the 100- and 200-level; up to maximum of three (3) credit hours.

Study Abroad Course Policy

  1. Students must take all core courses (required) they desire for CNE credit for a grade.
  2. Gen Ed courses may be taken pass/no pass if the student desires.
  3. Courses must be approved prior to student enrollment.
  4. Courses will not be approved after the fact.

Transfer Credit Approval Policy

  1. Students must locate a course as equivalent PRIOR to taking the course.
  2. Students must provide a screen shot from the transfer credit equivalency guide to their academic advisor prior to taking the course.
  3. Courses will not be approved after the fact.

Experiential Education (Internship Policy)5

  1. The Plan of Study for Construction Engineering requires the successful completion of 36 weeks of experiential learning facilitated and administered by the Construction Engineering program. Historically this requirement has been met by 3 internship periods as noted by CEM 29199 (CEM 19100), CEM 29299 (CEM 29100), and CEM 39399 (CEM 39100) found within the plan of study. 5,6
  2. No exception to this Policy is permitted without the prior approval of the Construction Engineering Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (or Appointee7). The only pre-approved exception is for Purdue ROTC program students who complete one (1) summer of “training” directly associated with the Purdue ROTC program commitments. The student will be required to produce a report with respect to the summer experience as if it were the standard 12-week internship period. This exception is included to promote inclusivity of a student population that has historically been unable to participate in the Construction Engineering program. 5
  3. Experiential education encompasses more than the traditional summer internship. For credit:
    • Non-summer work experiences (semester-based co-op) are acceptable. Assignments and support for the student will remain the same.
    • Undergrad research, sponsored and supported by faculty, and independent studies will be reviewed by the Appointee on a case-by-case basis. The Appointee will present the case to and seek approval in advance from the Construction Engineering Undergraduate Curriculum Appointee7.

Notes & Clarifications

  1. Core Courses – CNE (formerly CEM) Core Requirement courses are defined as those required to meet degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering. (EFD 42-14)
  2. Three Attempts – The policy was developed as part of EFD 42-14. It should be noted that a “W” is counted as part of the formula. Additionally, the student may submit to the Construction Engineering Undergraduate Curriculum for a 4th attempt appeal. Submission should be made via email to the administrative assistant assigned to the committee. The submission should be in the form of a letter/memo clearly articulating their case for the appeal. The committee will either approve or deny the request.
  3. Appointee – The appointee is the lead advisor for the Construction Engineering program.
  4. Technical Electives – per EFD 42-14.
  5. Internship Policy – per EFD 42012 which has changed to ExEd to be more inclusive.
  6. Numbers – have changed and, as of Spring 2024, allows for co-op certificate as part of the relationship with OPP.
  7. Appointee – relative to the experiential learning is The Walsh Group Director of Internships.
