Integrated sensing and delivery of oxygen for next-generation smart wound dressings

Chronic wounds affect over 6.5 million Americans and are notoriously difficult to treat. Suboptimal oxygenation of the wound bed is one of the most critical and treatable wound management factors, but existing oxygenation systems do not enable concurrent measurement and delivery of oxygen in a convenient wearable platform. Thus, we developed a low-cost alternative for continuous O2 delivery and sensing comprising of an inexpensive, paper-based, biocompatible, flexible platform for locally generating and measuring oxygen in a wound region.

Observing the path less traveled boosts quantum gain

When probing the subtle effects of quantum mechanics, all the parameters in the system and its measurements need to be finely tuned to observe the result you are hoping for. So what happens when you gear everything towards detecting what you least expect? Researchers at MIT and Purdue University in the U.S. took just this approach and found they could amplify quantum signals by a factor of 30 while conditionally changing the relative phase of a photon from π/80 to π/2. The results could provide the missing link that nudges a number of quantum network technologies closer to practical use.

New Software Streams Apps to Save Space on Your Phone

The way we consume multimedia content has changed over time, and so has the technology that delivers it. What began as downloading evolved into streaming, with remote copies of audio or video files transmitted over the Internet in real time—eliminating the need for a local copy stored on a device.

CDN Caching and Video Streaming Performance

To what extent do CDN caches deep inside the ISP or the operator network also improve QoE? Does it suffice to simply deploy the CDN appliance just past the peering point? This blog post describes a project, sponsored by Cisco’s Research and Open Innovation initiative, and undertaken by Prof. Sanjay Rao, his graduate student Ehab Ghabashneh at Purdue University, and that I had the privilege of advising, to explore this very question.

Purdue University Team Creates a Detection System to Alert Organizations to Cyberattacks

A new tool from Purdue University researchers may help stop cyberattacks. The Purdue team created a detection system to alert organizations to cyberattacks. The system is called LIDAR – which stands for lifelong, intelligent, diverse, agile and robust. “The name for this architecture for network security really defines its significant attributes,” said Aly El Gamal, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering in Purdue’s College of Engineering.

Researchers use drone-mounted microphones to suss out the shapes of rooms

Can a drone determine the shape of a room using microphones alone? That’s what Purdue University researchers set out to discover in a study that will be published next week in the SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry. In it, they propose a drone-mounted microphone array that measures sound emitted by a loudspeaker to inform a digital reconstruction of the physical surroundings.
