Recent ECE alum selected for Chorafas Foundation award

Shaimaa I. Azzam, who earned her PhD in summer 2020 from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the field of nanophotonics, has been awarded a 2020 Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation award.

Shaimaa I. Azzam, who earned her PhD in summer 2020 from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the field of nanophotonics, has been awarded a 2020 Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation award. 

 
Azzam’s submission was titled “Novel Light Trapping and Nonlinear Dynamics in Nanophotonic Devices.” Now at the University of California Santa Barbara, she is an Elings Prize Postdoctoral Fellow working in the area of quantum photonics.
 
At Purdue, she was advised by ECE Associate Professor Alexander Kildishev. She has been studying light in different ways and platforms since 2011. In her PhD research, she worked on designing, modeling and characterizing nanophotonic devices that can enhance light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Her extracurricular activities included Purdue OSA student chapter, SPIE student chapter (treasurer), and she volunteered each year at the NanoDays event organized by ECE for K-12 students.

The Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation, part of the Feinberg Graduate School at Weizmann Institute of Science, awards scientific prizes for outstanding work in selected fields in the engineering sciences, medicine and the natural sciences. It rewards research characterized by its high potential for practical application and by the special significance attached to its aftermath. Every year, partner universities in Europe, North America and Asia evaluate the research work of their graduating doctorate students and propose the best for prizing.
