Purdue ECE Prof. Yung-Hsiang Lu named director of College of Engineering Honors Program

Yung-Hsiang Lu is the new director of the College of Engineering Honors Program (EHP) at Purdue University. The appointment was effective July 1, 2025.
Lu is a professor in the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Computer Science. He joined the faculty at Purdue in 2002.
Students admitted to the College of Engineering and the John Martinson Honors College are automatically part of EHP, which supports students throughout their time at Purdue with EHP-specific advisors and first-year courses taught by EHP staff.
“Honors students are self-motivated and creative, with ambition to excel. It is a privilege working with these students,” Lu said. “University education plays crucial roles in every aspect of modern society. This position aligns with my passion of academic excellence, student mentorship and innovative solutions to solve the world’s pressing problems.”
Lu was the inaugural director of Purdue’s John Martinson Engineering Entrepreneurial Center (2020-2022), and he thinks that experience will serve him well in EHP.
“Entrepreneurship requires many skills, such as creativity, effective teamwork, visionary leadership, long-term strategic outlook, and most critically, the ability to deliver value to customers,” he said. “Exposure to entrepreneurial principles can significantly enhance honors students' professional development, equipping them with versatile skills applicable across diverse career paths.”
Lu is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a University Faculty Scholar, distinguished visitor of the Computer Society, distinguished scientist and distinguished speaker of the Association for Computing Machinery. His research areas include computer vision, embedded systems, artificial intelligence for music, and cloud and mobile computing.
“Dr. Lu will lead an incredible team that has been making a significant impact with the honors students, and we look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead,” associate dean for undergraduate education William Oakes said.
Lu replaced Jacqueline Linnes, the Marta E. Gross Professor of Biomedical Engineering who had been director since April 1, 2022.
