Vijay Gupta, Elmore Professor in Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elected as a Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), one of the most prestigious recognitions in the field of control systems.

IFAC Fellows are selected for their extraordinary contributions to the fields of automatic control and systems engineering. Gupta’s election acknowledges his pioneering work in distributed decision-making for cyber-physical systems, as well as his leadership in advancing theoretical foundations of control in large scale systems such as societal infrastructure.

Gupta’s research bridges model-driven and data-driven approaches to address the challenges of modern interconnected systems such as transportation networks, power grids, and water distribution systems. His work focuses on compositional control strategies for large-scale systems, developing learning algorithms suitable for control applications, cyber-physical security and privacy, and the design of incentives in distributed estimation and control.

“I am grateful to the International Federation of Automatic Control and humbled by this recognition of my work,” said Gupta. “This honor also reflects the collective efforts of my students, post-docs, collaborators, and mentors that I have been lucky to work with over the years.”

Gupta has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and has served as an associate editor for leading journals in his field. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including through being a fellow of IEEE, the 2018 Antonio Ruberti Young Research Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society, and the 2013 Donald P. Eckman Award from the American Automatic Control Council.

The formal presentation of Gupta’s IFAC Fellow plaque and certificate will take place during the IFAC World Congress, to be held August 23-28, 2026, in Busan, South Korea.

The International Federation of Automatic Control is a multinational federation of organizations representing the engineering and scientific communities concerned with automatic control and its applications.
