Engineers Without Borders EWB The EWB team is part of the national EWB organization, whose mission is to build a better world through engineering projects that empower communities to meet their basic human needs and equip leaders to solve the world's most pressing challenges. The EWB is currently working on • Description: EWB currently has five design teams: Nakyenyi biogas, Colquechata technical, Colquechata cultural, leadership, and new member. The goals of the five teams are as follows:
o The Nakyenyi biogas team is in the monitoring and evaluation phase of their project. The team has implemented a biogas digester at a local vocational school in Nakyenyi, Uganda. This biogas digester captures methane produced by manure from cows at the school, and pipes it to the kitchen, where it is used as fuel. The motivation behind implementing this technology is that there is deforestation occurring in Uganda. The previous source of cooking fuel at the school was firewood, which the school had to purchase. Additionally the firewood created a smoke-filled and unsafe work environment for the staff at the school.
o The Colquechata technical and Colquechata cultural teams are both working together with EWB Purdue’s most recent partner, the community of Colquechata, Bolivia. The goal of this project is to design and implement a water distribution system for the mountainous community of Colquechata, which has approximately 175 residents. An assessment trip was conducted in May of 2018 and information was gathered about the community and its water sources.
o The leadership team consists of the president, vice president, treasurer, project manager, media, and fundraising officers for the team. The goal of the leadership team is to support the chapter and assist in successful completion of our projects.
o The new member team is lead by several EPICS-EWB students and is made up of new members to the EWB Purdue team. The goal of the new member team is to introduce members to our chapter and educate them on our projects and methods while they are contributing to the rest of the chapter.

Global Air Quality Trekkers GAQT The Global Air Quality Trekkers (GAQT) team is a part of Purdue’s Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program and Innovation for International Development (I2D) Lab. GAQT is an interdisciplinary team of undergraduate engineering, science, and environmental health students. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) associated with exposure to elevated concentrations of indoor air pollutants produced by biomass stoves in poorly ventilated kitchens has led to nearly 4 million deaths annually (WHO, 2016). Women and children bare the great majority of the disease burden since they spend much of their time in the kitchens. This problem is observed in many developing areas of the world, including Nandi County in western Kenya. A group of women from Nandi saw the serious health effects this issue has imposed on their community and designed and built modified kitchens with improved ventilation via a chimney and additional roof-top and facade airflow pathways. During our January 2017 research visit to Nandi, we found a 60-80% reduction in particulate matter (fine and ultrafine particles) and carbon monoxide between the newly modified and traditional Nandi kitchens.
We are working with Nandi women's group to further improve kitchen ventilation through passive natural ventilation design and modeling. We will be building two demo kitchens this summer in Nandi to test our design improvements on the ground. Nandi women's groups will visit the demo kitchens and see the ventilation modifications in-person and learn how they can implement these changes in their own kitchens. We will also use these visits to receive feedback from Nandi women on further design modifications that could be implemented.

WRM uses a multidisciplinary approach to manage environmental projects that ties into local communities through natural resource management. Water Resource Management is focused on environmental projects that have specific applications for water. Environmental projects in WRM tie into natural resource management, with specific applications to how management of other natural resource management can affect the environment, and thusly, water use within communities. Projects in WRM are environmentally based, often tied to societal factors relating to the environment and/or ecosystem designs. Projects can either be indirectly related to water (like a hill-slope erosion park project that contributes sediment to the ecosystem/river) or directly related (like how hydroponic growing of vegetables can help solve food issues within the United States).
